Passing the torch

This week consisted of teachings and passing on what I know to the future of the Maine channel.

I went out with my camera and a student this week to try and teach a freshman who is working at the Maine channel how to shoot and edit. We set out on campus just shooting objects and people.

I first covered the basics of broadcast video, use a tripod and only pan and zoom if it helps the shot. When interviewing ask you subject to sit so it gives them less of an opportunity to fidget.

I also explained things like high definition and the difference between 1080p and 720p and standard definition. I discussed frames per second and how altering them will change the look of your video.

After the mock shooting exhibition I ended p giving a small rundown of final cut. I showed the basics of editing, how to import and export film. How to make cuts and when to make them as well as many other simple tools within the program.

Overall it was a good lesson to teach as it also allowed me to brush up on some items of broadcast journalism that I haven't used in awhile.
